Built environment education, architectural history and preservation consultancy

Services

With my background and training in architectural history, preservation, and education, I am able to deliver a wide variety of customized services for schools, museums, and historic sites.

For historical museums and sites

Visitorship is the key component of a historical museum or site’s mission.  Keeping visitors engaged and excited while providing a relevant experience is paramount, especially as it pertains to youth. For historical museums and sites, I can:

  • Research and write a thematic script that a docent may implement for school tours (K-12)
  • Develop and create interdisciplinary pre- and post-visit materials to support learning before, during, and after the class visit (K-12)
  • Develop web-based lesson plans about your site that teachers may download to use in their classroom (K-12)
  • Assess your site’s current educational offerings and make recommendations for changes and/or improvements
  • Offer professional development for museum educators and docents about architecture, preservation, or other relevant topics
  • Develop and write a student activity book or workbook about your site (K-12)
  • Create a self-guided interactive guide for young visitors to use with their families (K-12)
  • Develop an in-depth educational program involving visits by an educator to the classroom along with visits to your site
  • Design weekend family programs and experiences that are hands-on, interactive and fun

For schools and youth groups

If you represent a school or youth group in the New York City tri-state area, and you would like me to come to your school to conduct a 6-, 8-, 10-, or 12-week architecture-based residency for children or a professional development workshop for teachers, you may arrange for my services through one of the following New York City Department of Education Vendor organizations:

  • The Center for Architecture Foundation
  • Young Audiences NY
  • Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation

For magazines and publications

My writing, generally geared towards adults, runs the gamut from scholarly, historical reports for local landmarking or state and national-register purposes to general-interest articles about architecture and preservation.  I am also interested in writing content for children.

Testimonials

We would like to thank you for presenting to both of our classes about the history of major urban planners and also the tour of the Jane Jacobs exhibition. Your presentation was an inspiration for our own projects and developments.

- 12th grade architecture class, High School of Art and Design

It was fun to learn about something in a fun and awesome way. I loved creating a building with you and my group. It really made the Old Ship Meeting House come to life for me.

- 5th grade student, PS 150

Jane was a natural with students. She listens to their thinking and responds with warmth and knowledge. Jane is a natural educator who has a love for her community and clearly enjoys passing on her knowledge to others.”

- 1st and 2nd grade teacher, Village Community School

Thank you so much for coming in to teach architecture to the class (and me!). It’s so great to be able to expose the kids to something outside the mandated curriculum that is apparent in their everyday lives... they will never look at buildings without also thinking about them.

- 4th grade teacher, PS 196

It's amazing to see how the children work together... they are able to express themselves in ways that they sometimes struggle to find in words.

- 2nd grade teacher, PS 212
